Viagra and Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction is a problem that is not new to the medical science. Lately, talking about the sexual problems has been considered as a taboo, thus they became prominent in the 20th century when increasing number of men started having problems of erectile dysfunction due to change in lifestyle. Men with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol level also have the sexual problems especially erectile dysfunction. This has become important due to the increasing stress causing factors and junk food intake. All of them are interconnected and causes psychological problem in men as well.

Different risk factors were identified by the researchers in order to know the association among these diseases. Folk and natural remedies were prevalent until the clinical trials begun. In 1998, Pfizer introduced Viagra, which was considered as a magical drug in the medical history. All of a sudden, it was possible for men suffering from ED to have a relief and enjoy a healthy life with their partners.

Viagra inhibit the enzyme PDE in body, responsible for causing ED. As long as this enzyme is stopped, the erections are retained. This is the very reason of Viagra known as PDE5 inhibitor, preventing the functionality and thus enabling the erections to last for the longer time.

After Viagra, other drugs like Cialis and Levitra started to attract the consumers and the basis of the functionality was same. The natural supplements and products are still available, but they are usually ineffective. There is a need to know about other medications as well, but Viagra was the first and is still the best drug for ED.
The very concern is about the side effects of the drug. Like every normal medication, Viagra also has few side effects. There are mild side effects of this medication that goes away with time. These include: headache, stomach and back pain, flushing and stuffy nose. In case of severity, the doctor must be consulted immediately. As it is an FDA approved drug, so the company has an obligation of publishing the side effects no matter how mild or severe these are.
