One of the contagious and viral diseases, which affect the liver, is hepatitis C. Estimation shows that 4 million Americans are in contact with this viral disease. Famous Pamela Anderson is also among the list of people suffering from hepatitis C. Many people with this disease manage to live a healthy life, but this virus turns out to be deadly for some. A common misconception of hepatitis C is that it has vaccination.
In simple words inflammation of the liver is known as hepatitis C. An RNA virus causes this inflammation. It is also seen that hepatitis C usually spread into a person due to contact with infected blood. As it is a contagious disease therefore certain activities can put you at a higher risk of contraction with it. Activities involving exposition of one person's blood into another can put you into the risk of contracting the virus of hepatitis C. The risk of getting hepatitis C is higher in the drug users by sharing needles. It is a fact that the majority of people got this contagious virus by sharing needles. The virus of hepatitis C can also be transmitted through sharing razors, acupuncture, tattoos and needles. A higher risk of hepatitis C virus contamination is found in any needle item, which is shared and not properly sterilized.
Sharing toothbrushes and sexual contact also put you into risk to it. Any sexual activity during the menstrual cycle can also cause hepatitis C to a person. The blood of menstrual cycle carries the virus of hepatitis C. Sharing toothbrushes puts you at risk when the patient has oral cuts or sores. These cuts and sores are so small that they can go unnoticed, but they still release infected blood in small amounts.
Another way of getting the hepatitis C infection is the blood transfusions. The exposure to hepatitis C virus through transfusion of blood has become rare now due to screening of the blood before the transfusion.
A common misconception for people is that a vaccine exists for hepatitis C. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has cleared it that there is no approved vaccine for this virus at this time. This misconception stems because of the fact that hepatitis A and B has vaccines. But still there is more research to be done in the case of hepatitis C.
