Uncover the ugly truth about hepatitis B

What if I told you something about an illness that is often underestimated in terms of the damage it can cause to your health? Hepatitis is an illness that affects the liver and there are many types of this disease found in different regions of the world. Hepatitis B is the most dangerous one and it is an epidemic in the regions of Asia and Africa affecting a large number of populations. It is a viral disease caused by the virus called 'hepadnavirus'. The general symptoms of hepatitis B are nausea, vomiting, ill health, loss of appetite, fever and body ache. If not treated, the condition worsens and results in the fulminant hepatic failure that causes death of the patient. It is diagnosed with the help of tests called assays.
A good thing about the hepatitis B is that its vaccine has been successfully developed and is being used to get immunity from this illness. This is an epidemic illness and can spread uncontrollably in the nearby population. The vaccines are doing a great job in this regard and help the person stay protected from this dangerous disease. This is done according to the recommendations of WHO and new born are vaccinated for this purpose.

Hepatitis B infection can be of two types and the treatment depends on the type of infection. One may have an acute or chronic infection and the acute infection (self limiting) can be treated more easily and quickly. Patients with the chronic hepatitis B illness are at a high risk of developing the liver cancer that is very dangerous condition. Alpha-fetoprotein test is used for the diagnosis of such a condition.

There is no need for the treatment in case of the acute hepatitis and the patient recovers easily. However, this is not the case with the chronic hepatitis. The basic purpose of treatment in this regard is to eliminate the chances of liver failure and severity of the problem. Interferon is used for this purpose and has been proved to be an effective drug. Nucleotide analogues are also used for this purpose and they have their own effectiveness. The real problem arises when the virus gets immune to the nucleotide analogues and this is a great challenge for the researchers in this field. The treatment of hepatitis B is rather tricky and this makes it a problematic disease. One may suffer a lot if he or she discontinues treatment at some stage and may develop a more dangerous result.
